Ocular/ Eye Allergies
Of the 50 million people who suffer from allergies, about half of them have eye allergies. Though people with a history of allergic disease in their family are more susceptible, it can happen to anyone. Ocular allergy symptoms can cause a great deal of discomfort. Those suffering for eye allergies may experience the following:
- Watering
- Itching
- Sensitivity to light
- Redness and swelling to eyelid
It may feel like a foreign body sensation and can be painful. The eye may become swollen and puffy. This can be very uncomfortable and cause momentary blurry vision. Usually both eyes are affected with allergies.
Allergic eye disease is also known as allergic conjunctivitis or ocular allergy. An ocular eye allergy is when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance irritating the conjunctiva, the delicate membrane the covers the eye and the inside of the eyelid. When an allergen irritates the conjunctiva it causes it to become inflamed and irritated. Sometimes eye allergies can be mistaken for an eye infection, glaucoma, keratitis or iritis. To confirm that your symptoms may be ocular allergies please see your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.
Common causes of this condition are seasonal allergens like pollen and mold spores. Other allergens include irritants such as dust mites and pet dander. Most eye allergies are associated with other allergic diseases such as Hay Fever and Dermatitis. Bad reactions to medications or perfumes can also be a factor.
